Ultraviolet disinfection principle

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is classified into four categories based on biological effects: UV-A (320-400nm), UV-B (275-320nm), UV-C (200-275nm), and vacuum ultraviolet. For water treatment, only UV-C is utilized, with peak sterilization efficiency confirmed at around 260nm within this range.

The Guanyu UV disinfection system integrates expertise from optics, microbiology, mechanics, chemistry, electronics, and fluid mechanics. It employs a specialized, high-performance UV-C generator—engineered for efficiency, intensity, and longevity—to emit powerful UV-C light, which irradiates flowing water.

When waterborne bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms are exposed to a specific dose of 253.7nm UV-C light, their cellular DNA and structures are damaged, preventing reproduction and thus purifying the water.

Additionally, 185nm UV wavelengths break down organic molecules in water, producing hydrogen free radicals that oxidize these molecules into carbon dioxide, effectively reducing total organic carbon (TOC).

Factors affecting the effect of UV sterilization

UV transmittance (UVT)

The important factors affecting the effect of UV sterilization are the UV transmittance (UV transmission) of the sterilization medium (water) or the medium absorbance (absorbance). The transmittance of UV and the absorbance of the medium are affected by factors such as dissolved organic matter, inorganic matter and undissolved suspended matter in the water.

Total suspended particles (TSS)

The effect of suspended particles on the sterilization effect of UV is also very obvious. Suspended particles can absorb and reflect UV rays, thereby preventing UV rays from irradiating the DNA of bacteria and viruses. In addition, suspended particles will also accelerate the scaling and contamination of the quartz sleeve, thereby affecting the sterilization effect.

Particle size

The size of particles in the water has a great impact on the effect of UV sterilization, because large suspended particles will form shadows and dead corners for protecting bacteria and viruses. Usually, the effluent from the secondary sedimentation tank is more conducive to UV sterilization, and the average size of suspended particles in the water should be less than 30um.

Exposure time

The exposure time is related to the flow rate. When designing a UV system, it is generally designed according to the peak direct flow rate. The smaller the flow rate, the longer the exposure time, and the system has a greater effective dose.
