Ultraviolet disinfection principle

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is classified into four categories based on variations in biological effects: UV-A (320-400nm), UV-B (275-320nm), UV-C (200-275nm), and vacuum ultraviolet. In water treatment applications, only the UV-C segment is utilized, and within this range, ultraviolet rays around 260nm have been confirmed to deliver the highest sterilization efficiency.

The Guanyu ultraviolet disinfection device integrates multiple scientific fields, including optics, microbiology, mechanics, chemistry, electronics, and fluid mechanics. It works by using a specially engineered, high-efficiency, high-intensity, and long-lasting UV-C light source to emit intense UV-C radiation, which is directed at flowing water.

When bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms in the water are exposed to a specific dose of UV-C light (with a wavelength of 253.7nm), their cellular DNA and structural components are damaged, preventing them from reproducing. This process achieves water disinfection and purification.

Additionally, UV radiation with a wavelength of 185nm can break down organic molecules in water, generating hydrogen free radicals. These radicals oxidize organic molecules into carbon dioxide, thereby removing total organic carbon (TOC) from the water.

Factors affecting the effect of UV sterilization

UV transmittance (UVT)

The important factors affecting the effect of UV sterilization are the UV transmittance (UV transmission) of the sterilization medium (water) or the medium absorbance (absorbance). The transmittance of UV and the absorbance of the medium are affected by factors such as dissolved organic matter, inorganic matter and undissolved suspended matter in the water.

Total suspended particles (TSS)

The effect of suspended particles on the sterilization effect of UV is also very obvious. Suspended particles can absorb and reflect UV rays, thereby preventing UV rays from irradiating the DNA of bacteria and viruses. In addition, suspended particles will also accelerate the scaling and contamination of the quartz sleeve, thereby affecting the sterilization effect.

Particle size

The size of particles in the water has a great impact on the effect of UV sterilization, because large suspended particles will form shadows and dead corners for protecting bacteria and viruses. Usually, the effluent from the secondary sedimentation tank is more conducive to UV sterilization, and the average size of suspended particles in the water should be less than 30um.

Exposure time

The exposure time is related to the flow rate. When designing a UV system, it is generally designed according to the peak direct flow rate. The smaller the flow rate, the longer the exposure time, and the system has a greater effective dose.
