Types of UV Disinfection Lamps

UV disinfection lamps are mainly classified by operating pressure, structure and wavelength.
The four most common types in the water treatment industry are:

1. Low-pressure UV lamp

  • Single wavelength: 254 nm

  • Low power, long service life (8,000–12,000 hours)

  • Application: drinking water, purified water, small flow rate, clean water quality

2. Low-pressure high-output (LPHO) UV lamp

  • Single wavelength: 254 nm, but with higher power density

  • Higher efficiency than standard low-pressure lamps

  • Application: medium and large municipal wastewater and water plants

3. Medium-pressure UV lamp

  • Broad-spectrum multi-wavelength: 200–400 nm

  • High intensity, compact size, inhibits photoreactivation

  • Application: wastewater, reclaimed water, swimming pools, seawater, large-flow projects

4. Excimer UV lamp (e.g. 222 nm UV-C)

  • Shorter wavelength, safer for human exposure

  • Mainly used for air disinfection in occupied spaces

  • Rarely used in water treatment


Classification by Structure

5. Submersible UV lamp

Installed with a quartz sleeve, submerged underwater.
The most widely used in water treatment.

6. Open-channel / rack-type lamp

Used in open channels of wastewater treatment plants, not submerged.

Simple Summary

  • Stable performance & long life → Low-pressure / LPHO

  • Strong disinfection & small footprint → Medium-pressure

  • Air disinfection & human-safe → 222 nm excimer lamp
