How to Reduce Energy Consumption of UV Disinfection in Wastewater Treatment

  • Auto-adjust power based on water quality (Intelligent dimming)
Use variable power ballasts to automatically adjust output according to flow rate, UVT, and UV intensity. Run at lower power when water quality is good.
  • Keep quartz sleeves clean to reduce light loss
Perform regular mechanical/chemical cleaning or install automatic wiping systems to avoid fouling, which prevents running at full load unnecessarily.
  • Optimize pre-treatment to improve UV Transmittance (UVT)
Lower turbidity, suspended solids and color. Higher UVT improves penetration and reduces power required for disinfection.
  • Modular lamp control to operate only as needed
Switch lamp modules on/off according to flow rate. Operate partial lamps at low flow to avoid full-power waste.
  • Use high-efficiency lamps and high-transmittance quartz sleeves
Adopt low-pressure high-output or high-efficiency medium-pressure lamps with high-purity quartz to improve energy efficiency.
  • Avoid unnecessary continuous operation
Turn off lamps when there is no water flow to prevent dry running and wasted power.
  • Optimize reactor design for better photon utilization
Use reactors with reflectors and uniform hydraulic distribution to maximize UV usage efficiency.
  • Replace aged lamps on time
Decayed lamps require much higher power to meet disinfection standards. Timely replacement significantly reduces electricity consumption.
