Hard start applies high voltage instantly. Cold cathode filament suffers heavy instantaneous current bombardment, sputtering electron-emissive coating every startup. Preheat soft start: Low voltage preheats cathode filaments for 0.5~2 seconds to reach proper electron emission temperature before ramping up ignition voltage. It cuts inrush current and reduces cathode material loss.
Continuous operation (rare on/off): 5%~15% improvement. Lamp aging mainly comes from continuous irradiation, startup shock is minor.
Frequent start-stop (intermittent water treatment, multiple switches per day): 30%~80% improvement. Startup is the dominant failure cause in this scenario.
Example: LPHO lamp with hard start may only achieve 6000h service life under frequent cycling. With matched preheat soft start, service life can reach 8000~10000h.
Soft start cannot extend lamp life indefinitely. Quartz fouling, thermal aging and UV output decay still occur during operation.
Medium-pressure UV lamps gain nearly no obvious benefit from preheat soft start, as their failure mechanism differs.
Parameters of preheat sequence and current must match lamp specifications. Poorly designed soft start provides little or no benefit.
