Difference in Starting Mode between Low-pressure and Medium-pressure UV Lamps Low-pressure UV Lamp

Starting process: Filament preheating → high voltage pulse ignition → stable arc.

The ballast supplies low voltage to heat tungsten filaments to emit electrons.

1000~2000V high-frequency pulse breaks down mercury vapor.

After ignition, operating voltage drops to tens of volts.

Feature: Preheating is mandatory. Mismatched medium-pressure ballast burns out filaments quickly.

Medium-pressure UV Lamp

Starting process: Cold start without preheating.

3000~10000V ultra-high pulse voltage directly ionizes mercury vapor to form plasma arc.

No filament preheating procedure. Frequent start-up accelerates electrode erosion.

Key reminder

Ballasts for low-pressure and medium-pressure lamps have different startup logic and output voltage. They are not interchangeable.
