Main Functions
Inactivate Cryptosporidium and Giardia
These two parasites are difficult to eliminate by traditional chlorine disinfectants. UV is highly effective against these pathogens and meets swimming pool sanitary requirements.
Degrade chloramines (trichloramine, monochloramine)
Chloramines are the main cause of pungent pool odors, eye irritation and skin discomfort. UV breaks down combined chlorine and greatly improves the swimming experience.
Disinfect bacteria and viruses, and reduce microbial load of pool water.
Key Selection Guidelines for Swimming‑pool‑specific UV Systems
Medium‑pressure UV sterilizers are preferred
Medium‑pressure UV delivers a broad‑spectrum output with far better performance for chloramine decomposition compared with low‑pressure UV. Its operating characteristics are well‑suited to swimming‑pool water conditions. Low‑pressure UV is mostly applied for drinking‑water treatment. Medium‑pressure UV is the mainstream choice for public swimming pools, except for small private pools.
Installation position: Install after sand filter and before chlorine dosing point.
Flow rate matching: Select equipment according to pool circulation flow rate instead of total pool water volume.
Limitations
UV provides no residual disinfection capacity. Once water flows out of the UV chamber, the disinfection effect disappears. Free chlorine must be maintained for continuous disinfection in pipelines and pool tanks. UV shall never be used alone without chlorine addition.
Water turbidity will directly weaken UV performance. Stable filtration system operation is mandatory.
UV cannot remove organic pollutants such as urea and sweat. Filtration, water replenishment and adsorption treatment are required as complements.
