Conclusion
Standard UV disinfection equipment is not suitable for direct treatment of highly turbid, opaque liquids. UVC light has weak penetration. Turbidity, suspended solids and color will absorb and scatter UV rays, preventing ultraviolet light from reaching microorganisms.
Slightly turbid liquid: Usable with pre-filtration, customized reactor, medium-pressure UV is preferred.
Highly opaque, dark, high-suspension liquid: Conventional pipeline UV sterilizers are ineffective.
Suspended particles shield bacteria and greatly reduce disinfection efficiency.
Suggestions
Install pretreatment (filtration) to improve UV transmittance (UVT@254nm).
Adopt thin-film UV reactor if filtration is unavailable.
Switch to ozone, thermal sterilization or chemical disinfection if UV transmittance remains too low.
