Natural air cooling (passive cooling, most common for low power LPHO)The ballast uses aluminum shell with fin heat sink, heat dissipated by natural air convection, no fan.
Advantages: Simple structure, no noise, low failure rate, maintenance-free, IP65 available
Disadvantages: Limited heat dissipation capacity, not suitable for high-power medium-pressure ballasts; overheating risk in sealed cabinets
Application: Low power LPHO ballasts, control cabinet with good ventilation
Forced air cooling (active air cooling, medium & high power centralized cabinet)Axial fans installed in control cabinet to boost airflow for multiple ballasts.
Advantages: Strong cooling capacity, reasonable cost; preferred for multi-ballast control cabinet
Disadvantages: Fan is wearing part, noise; dust and moisture may block filter and damage fan
Application: Medium pressure UV systems, electrical cabinets with multiple lamps
Water cooling (liquid cooling, high-end high power, in-line / open channel UV)IP68 fully potted sealed ballast submerged in process water for heat exchange; cold plate water cooling is alternative.
Advantages: Excellent cooling, low temperature rise, greatly extend ballast life; stable under high ambient temperature
Disadvantages: High cost, strict sealing requirement; leakage risk leads to equipment burnout
Application: High power medium pressure UV modules, high water temperature working condition, limited installation space
Potting thermal conduction (internal thermal enhancement, combined with above cooling methods)Thermal epoxy filled inside ballast to transfer heat from power components to metal housing. Not a standalone cooling method.
Advantages: Improve thermal conductivity, moisture-proof, anti-condensation, shock resistance; standard for submersible ballast
Disadvantages: Non-repairable after potting; whole unit replacement required when failed
Selection tips: Standard LPHO projects → aluminum shell natural air cooling; multi-lamp cabinet → forced air cooling; high-power MP / high inlet water temperature → water cooling.
