Advanced oxidation processes have strong oxidation capacity and can rapidly and thoroughly degrade refractory organic pollutants with no secondary pollution. They are effective in removing color, odor and micro-pollutants. However, they also have disadvantages including high investment and operation costs, high energy and chemical consumption, sensitivity to water quality, and potential by-product formation. Therefore, AOPs are usually used as an advanced treatment step rather than a standalone process.
