1. Lamp Principle & Spectrum

Low‑pressure UV (LP‑UV)Low‑pressure mercury vapor discharge, monochromatic output, main wavelength 254 nm, mainly for germicidal disinfection.

Medium‑pressure UV (MP‑UV)High‑pressure mercury vapor discharge, broad‑spectrum UV (200‑400 nm), covering UVC, UVB and UVA. Besides 254 nm for disinfection, it emits 185 nm for advanced oxidation, chloramine degradation and TOC reduction.

2. UV Intensity & Power Density

‑ Low‑pressure: Low single‑lamp power and low UV intensity. Multiple lamps are required for high flow rates. ‑ Medium‑pressure: Extremely high UV intensity per lamp. Few lamps are sufficient for large‑flow treatment.

3. Energy Consumption

‑ Low‑pressure: High electro‑optical conversion efficiency, lower power consumption per unit UV output. Total power rises when many lamps are used for large flow. ‑ Medium‑pressure: Higher single‑lamp power and lower conversion efficiency. Fewer lamps for large‑flow projects, but higher power consumption per UV watt.

4. Startup Mode

‑ Low‑pressure: Cold start. Supports frequent on‑off with short startup time. ‑ Medium‑pressure: Hot start with pre‑heating required. Must cool down before restarting. Frequent switching will greatly shorten lamp service life.

5. Lamp Service Life

‑ Low‑pressure: 8 000‑12 000 hours with moderate light decay. ‑ Medium‑pressure: 5 000‑8 000 hours. Higher working temperature leads to larger light decay; good cooling is required.

6. Water Quality Adaptability

‑ Low‑pressure: Suitable for clear water. UV penetration drops sharply under high turbidity or color. ‑ Medium‑pressure: High intensity provides better penetration for turbid or colored water; widely used for pool chloramine removal.

7. Typical Applications

Low‑pressure UVDrinking water, purified water, wastewater terminal disinfection, small‑medium circulating water. Only for disinfection, no oxidation function.

Medium‑pressure UVPublic swimming pools (chloramine removal), large‑scale water treatment, AOP advanced oxidation, TOC degradation, disinfection‑by‑product removal, high‑flow industrial water treatment.

8. Equipment Cost

‑ Low‑pressure: Low‑cost single lamp, but large chamber and many lamps for high‑flow projects. ‑ Medium‑pressure: Expensive lamps and ballasts. Less lamps required for large flow, so smaller overall footprint.

9. Main Limitations

‑ Low‑pressure: Bulky for large flow; no oxidation capacity, cannot degrade chloramine or organics. ‑ Medium‑pressure: High operating temperature, not suitable for frequent startup‑shutdown, high spare‑part cost, slight water temperature rise caused by infrared heat.

  1. For disinfection only, clean water, small‑to‑medium flow → choose low‑pressure UV.

  2. For chloramine/organic degradation, swimming pools, large flow, poor water transparency → choose medium‑pressure UV.
