Existing Application Problems and Limitations Application Analysis of Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfectors in the Secondary Water Supply Industry

Although UV disinfectors are suitable for the needs of the secondary water supply industry, they still have the following problems in application due to limitations of technical principles, which need to be avoided in a targeted manner.

1. No Sustained Bactericidal Ability, Risk of Secondary Pollution

UV disinfection is instantaneous physical sterilization without residual components for sustained bacteriostasis. If the disinfected water is polluted during pipeline transportation or secondary storage, residual microorganisms may repair damaged DNA and restore activity through photoreactivation and dark reactivation mechanisms. It is especially suitable for scenarios where treated water can be used immediately without secondary pollution in pipelines. For secondary water supply systems with long-distance transportation or aging pipe networks, single use has high risks.

2. Limited Inactivation Effect on Specific Microorganisms

For spore-forming bacteria (such as Bacillus subtilis), due to their dense spore shells and stronger DNA protection mechanisms, the UV dose needs to be greatly increased to achieve effective inactivation, and it is difficult to achieve ideal results with UV disinfectors alone; For pathogenic microorganisms deeply wrapped by particles, there is also the problem of incomplete inactivation.

3. Dependence on Electricity and Regular Maintenance

UV disinfectors are completely driven by electricity. If there is a power outage or equipment failure in the secondary water supply pump room, the disinfection system will fail immediately without emergency disinfection capacity. Standby power supplies need to be matched for remote areas or scenarios with unstable power supply; At the same time, problems such as scaling of quartz sleeves and aging of lamp tubes will directly affect the disinfection effect. If maintenance is not timely, it is easy to lead to unqualified water quality.
